FAMU Guest Talks: Lambros Papanikolatos: Photography and the Contemporary Art Ecosystem

25. 3. 2026

This lecture offers an overview of the structures, mechanisms, and dynamics that shape the contemporary art and photography world. Drawing on his long experience as a photographer, cultural producer, and educator, Lambros Papanikolatos maps the terrain artists must navigate today: from institutional frameworks and market logic to questions of visibility, self-positioning, and the communication of artistic work. The talk considers how photographers and visual artists can engage critically and strategically with the systems in which their practice circulates, and opens toward a broader discussion of authorship, presence, and professional sustainability in contemporary visual culture.

Lambros Papanikolatos is a photographer, visual artist, educator, and cultural producer based in Athens. A FAMU alumnus, he holds an MA in Photography from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. He has collaborated with major international photography festivals and institutions including Houston FotoFest, Rencontres d'Arles, and Thessaloniki Photobiennale, and has co-organised seminars with Antoine d'Agata, Michael Ackerman, and JH Engström. He currently leads the BA Photography programme at AKTO / Middlesex University and is a visiting professor at FAMU.
